Twin Cities · Restaurants, Bars & Breweries

We handle the paperwork. You handle the menu.

Liquor, health, fire, building, and the dozen smaller permits nobody warns you about — filed, tracked, and followed up on directly. One point of contact, a Minnesota deputy city clerk who reviews these applications for a living, and one calendar for every deadline — so the hours go into running your business, not chasing five different offices for paperwork.

One missed date is a fine, a lapsed license, or a stop-sale order.

Six agencies. Six timelines. One missed step costs you weeks — or your license.

If you're opening, a liquor license goes through the city — usually a background investigation, then a council vote on a calendar the council sets, not you. A health permit usually runs through the county, not the city. Fire wants its own walkthrough. Building wants a certificate of occupancy, signed off by a licensed contractor. If you're already open, none of that goes away — it just repeats every year, quietly, until a renewal gets missed and turns into a fine, a lapsed license, or an inspector telling you to stop until it's fixed. Either way, none of these offices talk to each other.

We don't hand you a checklist and wish you luck. We file the paperwork, track every deadline against every agency, and tell you exactly what's waiting on you versus what's waiting on us — every week until you're open, and every year after.

What actually happens once you reach out.

Same process whether you're opening new or just tired of tracking renewals yourself.

01

Book a call

Twenty minutes, no obligation. Tell me what you're opening, running, or renewing, and I'll tell you plainly what it needs.

02

Get a scope and price

A flat quote for exactly what you need — no surprise fees mid-engagement, no upsell you didn't ask for.

03

I file directly

With the agency, not through you. You get copies for your records — nothing beyond the agencies that actually require it ever sees your documents.

04

You get tracked

Every deadline goes on your calendar. I follow up whenever there's something to report, or something I need from you.

One place, every agency your business touches.

Organized by where you are in the lifecycle — opening, staying current, or growing.

Launch & Opening
Getting the doors open
  • Zoning & land use approvals (CUPs, parking variances)
  • Health department plan review — kitchen layout, hood ventilation, grease trap
  • Liquor, food, and sales tax registration, bundled together
  • Corporate setup — EIN, MN LLC filing
  • HACCP filing coordination (we manage the relationship, a food-safety specialist writes the plan)
Ongoing & Renewals
Staying current
  • Master Compliance Calendar across every license you hold
  • MN Secretary of State annual entity renewal
  • Certificate of insurance tracking — liquor liability, general liability, workers' comp
  • Food Manager (CFPM) certification tracking
  • License display verification
Specialty Permits
The dozen smaller ones
  • Patio, encroachment & sidewalk sign permits
  • Entertainment license upgrades, ASCAP/BMI/SESAC
  • Grease trap (FOG) & refuse enclosure permitting
  • Hemp beverage (LPHE) registration
  • Cannabis local-layer municipal registration
Food Trucks
A separate regulatory path
  • MDH vs. MDA jurisdiction mapping by menu
  • Per-city licensing across every stop
  • 21-day rule tracking
  • Commissary agreement audits
  • Festival & event permitting

Priced by the year, not the month.

Already open and just tired of tracking this yourself? Start straight into Filed or Cleared below — no launch fee required. Opening new? Same two packages apply once you're open; see launch pricing further down for getting there.

A license renews once a year. An entity renewal happens once a year. So billing follows that — one annual retainer, not twelve installments pretending there's ongoing work every month.

Only need one thing done, not everything tracked? You don't have to sign up for a retainer to work with us — see à la carte pricing below.

Filed
$650–$900/year
Coffee shops, bakeries, fast-casual spots, single-unit food trucks
  • Renewal tracking for city business, food & liquor licenses
  • MN Secretary of State annual entity renewal
  • Certificate of insurance (COI) tracking
  • License display verification
  • Food Manager (CFPM) certification tracking
  • Food trucks: multi-city calendar, 21-day rule, street vending permits, suppression recert tracking

Packages exist for clients who want everything tracked continuously. If you just need one filing this year, we'll price and handle that on its own.

A single permit or renewal
A sign permit, a patio permit, a grease trap permit, an entertainment license upgrade, a one-time event permit — filed individually, no package attached
$150 – $800
Opening new?
Launch packages are billed separately from the retainer — ground-up build, existing-space takeover, liquor-only, or food truck. Move into Filed or Cleared once you're open, or not at all if you don't need ongoing tracking.
$1,000 – $8,000+
Corporate structure updates
Filing changes in officers, shareholders, or LLC managers
$200 – $400
Menu & concept modifications
Filing updates when a location changes service model — counter-service to full bar, for example
$300 – $800
Multiple locations
Each location pays the Filed or Cleared rate that fits its own profile — no separate enterprise tier to negotiate

Food trucks run a different rulebook entirely.

No liquor licensing — but real complexity from crossing jurisdictions daily. Minnesota splits licensing between two state agencies depending on your menu, and filing with the wrong one forfeits your plan review fee and adds four to six weeks. Then every city you operate in wants its own license.

Ask about your route
Menu splitHot prepared food goes through the Dept. of Health; pre-packaged items go through the Dept. of Agriculture. We confirm which applies before you file.
Per cityA separate license in every city you operate in — including across Hennepin and Ramsey counties.
21-day rulePark at one private lot more than 21 days a year and you trigger state land-use rules. We track it so it doesn't sneak up on you.
CommissaryYour shared-kitchen agreement is required for permit approval — we audit and maintain it.
01

We file, not advise.

Documentation, submission, follow-up, and correction letters are handled directly as your authorized preparer — never handed back to you as a checklist to figure out yourself.

02

Liquor licensing is included.

Most national permit expediters skip it entirely. It's usually the longest pole in the whole opening, and it's our anchor service, not an afterthought.

03

Built for independent operators.

One to three locations — a single restaurant, a small local group, a coffee shop with a second spot in the works. National permit platforms are built for the enterprise end of the market. This isn't trying to be that.

04

Reviewed from the other side of the counter.

As a Minnesota deputy city clerk, I review applications like yours for a living. I know what makes a reviewer send a packet back — and how to avoid it the first time.

Brennan Sorensen
Minnesota Deputy City Clerk
Founder, The Kitchen Permit Co.

Handled by someone who's reviewed it from the other side.

As a Minnesota deputy city clerk, I process the same kinds of applications this site is built around — liquor license packets, sign permits, entertainment license upgrades, annual renewals — and see directly which ones move through cleanly and which ones get sent back. I know what a complete liquor packet looks like before it reaches a council agenda, what makes a health department reviewer ask for revisions, and which small details — a certificate that's a day out of date, a form filed for the wrong license type — are the ones that cost owners weeks.

That's the experience behind every filing I handle for you. Your documentation gets prepared the way the reviewing agency actually wants it, not just the way a generic template says it should look. Your deadlines get tracked against the calendar your specific city actually runs, confirmed at intake rather than assumed. And when an agency has a question or asks for a correction, I'm the one who answers it directly — not someone relaying it back for you to sort out.

Plain about what this is — and isn't.

A generalist "compliance" firm will say yes to almost anything. We won't, and here's exactly where the line sits:

—Payroll, tip pools, and tax compliance. That's an accountant's job, not a permitting one.
—Server training certification. We track when it's due. We don't administer or certify it.
—Writing your HACCP plan. We coordinate with a qualified food safety consultant and manage the filing — the technical plan itself comes from a specialist.
—Representing you at a hearing or appeal. That's your attorney's job. We'll organize the documentation they need.
—Pulling building, electrical, plumbing, or fire suppression permits. Minnesota requires a licensed contractor for that. We track and sequence the timeline around their work.

Send us the deal at letter of intent, not at build-out.

Commercial real estate agents, property managers, business brokers, lenders, and attorneys handling restaurant formations all run into the same moment — a client with a space or a signed deal who still needs licensing handled before it turns into a delay. Property managers in particular see tenant turnover before it's public anywhere else; flagging it early means the licensing timeline is mapped before the lease is even signed, instead of surfacing as a surprise mid-build-out.

A restaurant that opens on schedule is one that can actually pay rent, staff, and whatever loan got it there — which tends to matter to whoever else is at that table.

Introduce a client
Is this legal advice?
No. We handle documentation, filing, and follow-up directly as your authorized preparer. For contested hearings, license appeals, or legal disputes, we prepare your file and hand it to your attorney.
Do you serve areas outside Minneapolis and St. Paul?
Yes — the full Twin Cities metro. Minneapolis and St. Paul are our lead markets because they're the highest-volume and most complex, but that's where we start, not where we stop.
Do I have to sign up for a package?
No. If you only need one thing — a single permit, a one-time renewal, a filing tied to one event — we'll price and handle just that, no retainer attached. Packages are for clients who want everything tracked continuously, not a requirement to work with us.
How is this billed?
One annual retainer, not a monthly subscription. Most of this work happens once a year — a license renews, an entity renews — so the billing matches the actual rhythm of the work instead of implying ongoing effort that isn't there most months.
What if I don't know which package I need?
Tell us your concept and location on a call and we'll tell you plainly — Filed if you're a coffee shop or fast-casual spot, Cleared if you're pouring alcohol, running entertainment, or serving outdoors.
Do you handle hemp beverages or THC drinks?
Yes, under the Cleared package — with one caveat we'll walk you through directly: a federal rule change taking effect November 2026 may substantially change or eliminate this product category. We revisit it with every Cleared client at signup and at each renewal.
Do you handle cannabis licensing?
We handle the municipal registration layer for businesses that already have state OCM preliminary approval — not the full state application itself, which is served by cannabis-specific firms.
